Learning design has become trendy in 2018
Medical diagnostic testing is a key component in the efficient delivery of health-care solutions. However, the widespread use of diagnostic tests in developing nations such as India is held back because of their development for and in developed markets. Further, the test results take time to come in from a centralized lab which may be disastrous in a critical care situation.

Silk Is the Secret to These Cheap, Accurate Diagnostic Tests
September 10 2018
MOST DIP-AND-GO DIAGNOSTIC strips—common drugstore tests for pregnancy, or blood glucose—are made of paper or plastic. Cheap and easy to manufacture, those are the go-to substrates for these types of tools, affordable and disposable. But at Achira Labs, a biotech startup …

Achira weaves microfluidics into diagnostics
Bangalore-based Achira Labs has figured out a way to hand weave diabetes test strips from silk. That sounds pretty luxurious compared to the standard materials of plastic or paper. But silk turns out to have several advantages in a country like India, where weavers who can work a handloom are abundant and the material is readily available and inexpensive.

Weavers Turn Silk Into Diabetes Test Strips
In what can be termed as the perfect blend of an old art and new technology, a small start-up in Bangalore, India, is trying to apply a cutting edge science like microfluidics to the centuries old art of weaving in an effort to develop an effective diagnostic. Started in 2009, Achira Labs is a technology company that is into building analytical medical diagnostic platforms using a microfluidics approach.

Thought Leader Award by IOT India Congress
The fourth edition of India’s largest confluence of digital-technology stakeholders, the IoT India Congress 2019 concluded its two-day event in Bangalore with a footfall of 1600+ participants and 70+ speakers. Smt. Aruna Sundararajan (Secretary of IT and Electronics, Department of Telecom), Arvind Tiwary, (Chair IoT Forum, TiE) and Dr. Dhananjaya Dendukuri, (CEO and Co-founder, Achira Labs) were recognised for their excellence and leadership in the IoT space.

The Virus Detector
The journey: Prasiddhi Bhandari and Swathy Sridharan have worked on a fluid chip that can be used as a test for viruses. “A piece of silk is coated with antibodies for the rotavirus that causes diarrhoea. When a drop of stool containing the virus is sprinkled on it, the antibody binds to the virus and leads to a colour change because of the chemicals present,” says Dr Dhananjay Dendukuri, CEO of Achira Labs in Bangalore.
